QIPP is a large-scale national initiative for the NHS which will improve the quality of care the NHS delivers while making up to £20 billion of efficiency savings by 2014-15 across England. This will ensure that every £1 spent in the health service is used to maximum value.
In London, large numbers of NHS staff, including clinicians, have been leading and support this change. Integrated QIPP plans, which address the quality and productivity challenges, have been developed for each PCT cluster, which ensures that QIPP is delivered locally throughout the NHS in London.
The SHA is responsible for the performance management and monitoring of QIPP and managing the pan-London QIPP work such as primary care. In order to complement the national programme, NHS London chose to concentrate on three areas:
For example, the primary care work has delivered more than 30 new PCTs across London. In addition, clinical leaders working together have produced a standards framework for general practice that sets out the standards required for patients to get a good service from their GPs, in patient-friendly language, for publication by the Greater London Authority.
However, we are not complacent about the future challenges to healthcare in London, and our priority is to continue developing innovative QIPP projects to enhance the quality of care given by London's NHS.
