What we do

Enhanced Recovery Programme

Enhanced Recovery, also known as Rapid or Accelerated Recovery or Fast Track surgery, is an evidence-based approach to the care of patients, before, during and after a scheduled surgical procedure.

The principle of Enhanced Recovery is to improve the patient experience with quicker recovery times, and improved clinical outcomes by enabling the patient to be part of the decision making process. When organisations use Enhanced Recovery pathways for surgery, savings can be made by reducing the time patients stay in hospital leading to more patients being treated.

NHS London has a role in implementing Enhanced Recovery across London by sharing the good practice principles of enhanced recovery models of care and bringing together the expertise and experience of Enhanced Recovery implementations that have already started, improving the quality of planned care; building on experience; working with the partners to share the learning and avoiding duplication of effort in order to improve the overall impact across the NHS.
