Big improvement in fight against superbugs

Figures released today by NHS London shows hospitals are winning the war on Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs).

68% fewer patients acquired MRSA bloodstream infections compared to the same months in 2003/2004. A figure that is 5% lower than the national average reduction.

Nearly half as many patients acquired Clostridium difficile in the months April to September compared with the same period in 2007

Colin Ovington, NHS London's Director for Infection Control, "The figures are the result of an enormous effort by everyone within the health service in London. I am delighted with these results, they give the public confidence that we take hygiene in our hospitals very seriously. This, of course, does not mean that we can relax, we must keep up this tremendous effort, especially with the winter month approaching, when hospitals tend to be busier."

Notes to editors

1. The 12 month rolling position for C-diff is 5382 cases, NHS London's target is 5322 cases by 2010/2011
