London's workforce

London Commissioner for Medical and Dental Education (LCMDE)

LCMDE is responsible for commissioning medical and dental training in London. It is working to improve the quality of patient care by ensuring that doctors and dentists of the future are educated, trained and motivated to play a key part in delivering a first class modern health service.

The aim is to do this in a way that is responsive to the Government's national objectives for health and social care, the local context in which our doctors and dentists work, and the changing needs and expectations of the patients we serve.

The intention is to develop a system which encourages and rewards excellence and innovation in education and improves provision by bringing educational programme management closer to local service providers.

Our development will implement a system that is right for London and successfully takes into account London's longstanding training activities relationship with Kent, Sussex and Surrey and the East of England.

The transition commences in November 2010 and will ensure implementation without adverse impact on the education of the 14,000 trainee doctors and dentists already in the system.
