London's workforce

Education Commissioning

Overview

NHS London has responsibility for ensuring that London has the right number of healthcare professionals with the right skills to deliver world-class patient care.

The NHS in London invests over £1bn in education and training every year. Investment is made on programmes of education to train new healthcare professionals and also to drive up clinical standards and improve clinical leadership via continuous personal and professional development (CPPD). This is an important investment, as many of the staff currently working in the NHS in London will still be working here in ten years' time.

All healthcare staff make a huge personal investment and commitment to patients. We need to match this commitment by supporting their education and training so that they develop the skills and confidence to deliver care in new ways in the future.

NHS London is committed to transforming education commissioning to establish a more flexible and coherent system that aims to serve as a powerful tool in ensuring that London is able to deliver world-class healthcare. To effect this transformation, a series of projects and development workstreams have been created within NHS London to deliver rapid but sustainable improvements in the education commissioning system.
